52- #52PickUp and We Play A Game!

This week is interesting. Alex and I are hoping to be joined by Tim as I promised last week. Will he show?

We discuss the history of my #52PickUp webseries, how I came up with the idea, how I decided on which films to watch, and test Alex’s viewing prowess with these classic (and not-so classic) films.

Then we discuss my newest entry in 2017’s #52PickUp: Waterworld.

See all of my current films in the #52PickUp Series, and which ones I watched last year.

And finally, we play a game that you too can play! I ripped it straight from a podcast that I listen to, who, in turn, stole it from a radio show!

#52PickUp: The Shameless Topic! (Starts at 00:00)

#52PickUp– Waterworld (20:39)

Alex’s Jason and Deb’s IMDb Game (30:23)

Plugs and Close (45:02)

The Human Mind and its Powers

I’ve had this draft saved in my blog’s bowels for over a year now. Originally, it was called “My Physical Memory Lanes,” but it’s more than that now; this post is about the mind’s different abnormalities, or rather the ones which I’ve encountered. I’m going to touch upon three unique experiences that my mind had been privy to over the years, the most recent occurring a few nights ago. But first; the most common occurrence of the three:

1. Deja Vu

Have any of you ever experienced Deja Vu? The term literally translates to “Already Seen,” and happens to around seventy percent of the population at some point in their lives. It usually occurs for about thirty seconds, but can sometimes extend past that duration.Read More »

“Don’t Think Twice” #ConTENders 2016

This week’s Railroad Square Cinema viewing was a film that I had requested to be shown there (not that my lone voice had much of an impact on the owners’ decision), but a #ConTENder for the best film of the year is the 2016 comedy/drama:

dont-think-twice-poster

Don’t Think Twice is a film about an improv group known as The Commune, who perform in New York City, and not-so-secretly wish they could be cast in the thinly-veiled allegory to Saturday Night Live called Weekend Live. Jack Mercer (played brilliantly by Keegan-Michael Key), lands the role and it causes a dynamic fissure amongst the entire team. But in reality, the film is about failure. Writer/ Director Mike Birbiglia said as much when interviewed on the Scriptnotes podcast:Read More »

Top 15 Films of 2015

If you were ask me tomorrow at 5:00pm what was my favorite movie of 2015, I’d tell you a different answer rather than if you had waited until after supper. 2015 was that close for me, and ended up being one fantastic year for cinema, yet only was half expected. For my friend Brandon and I, the build up to the year was epic. Then as the year progressed, we kind of felt let down. Some of the big films didn’t hit that well, but as the dust settled… 2015 was a really fantastic year.

And honestly, I could have put almost every one of these films in the top three. These were the fifteen films that I truly loved.

I’d decided to wait until I was able to catch a few extra films that were released in 2015 and so only now, was I able to compile my Top 15 Films of 2015. Yes Top Fifteen. My initial list was 13, and as I struggled to pare it down, the aforementioned friend, Brandon, told me he was to make a Top 15…

…so screw it, it’ll make it easier, right?

Wrong.

Now I must stress, as I had mentioned before in my Top 20 Films of the #DLMChallenge that the two lists are dissimilar. This list is a collection of both the caliber of the films and how they impacted me.

So it may surprise you. But first–Read More »

New Film Series: #52Pick-Up

After the success of my #DLMChallenge where I watched #365Movies in #365Days, I’ve come to realize that while I’m proud to have seen 368 films [some amazing, some atrocious], it took way too much time; especially the #DLMChallenge individual blog entries (Yeah, no, I didn’t finish those…).

So now for 2016, I’m going to write a new, more succinct series. This series is called #52Pick-Up. In this series, I’ll watch one movie a week. This movie will be one that I have already seen, and one that has shaped my love of movies.

This will also mean that these films may not all be gems, in fact, most will be sci-fi films of all caliber.

After re-watching these childhood favorites, I will recap the movie’s plot, rate it, then ask a series of questions such as:

Where/when did I first see it?

How did it hold up over the years?

What did I like about them and why?

And finally, Lessons Learned? Examples: What did I learn regarding the filmmaking production, Hollywood, or myself from this film?

For a tease of my first film in this series…. Stay Tuned.

-Jamie (@GuyOnAWire)

#52Pick-Up is the first of THREE new series on this blog, and the most frequent. What are your thoughts? Any at all to share? Comment below. Be sure to follow me as well for more on the series up ahead.

My #DLMChallenge Top 20

Parring down this massive list of 368 movies into my favorite list of just ten is a scary thought. So I determined that I would have to do at least a Top 20.

Naturally, I’ve removed the ability for the #ReWatch365 movies to make this list. This is truly my favorite of the new movies I’ve seen this year.

I will make a separate Top 10 for the movies released in 2015, and those will be based on the quality and my personal tastes (coming soon).

In an attempt to differentiate from the 2015 Best Of list, this list will feature the movies that really spoke to me, ones that gave me a feeling that permeated quality, and filled me with personal substance. Yeah, intense.

But first, here are some Honorable Mentions from the #DLMChallenge 2015 (The ones in bold nearly made the list):Read More »
